Groening on the future of Futurama and The Simpsons

In an effort to plug his new Futurama movie – Into the Wild Green Yonder – The Simpsons/Futurama creator, Matt Groening, sat down for an interview with CNN.

Among other things, Groening confirmed that Fox has signed on for at least two more seasons of The Simpsons. When pressed about the future of Futurama, Groening said that he’d love to create more episodes for Comedy Central (which currently holds the rights to broadcast the series). But for now, we’ll have to settle for the upcoming 4 installments of Into the Wild Green Yonder on Comedy Central (or you can watch the new “episodes” as a complete movie on DVD released two days ago).

I don’t know about you folks, but I’d absolutely prefer new Futurama episodes over new Simpsons. Don’t get me wrong, The Simpsons, even at its worst, is better than most of the other sitcoms out there. But, I find that Futurama (the series, yes, but also the more recent feature-length films) seems to better capture the essence of earlier Simpsons’ ingenuity than do more recent Simpsons’ episodes. Come on! Who can resist the zany adventures of a dysfunctional intergalactic delivery service featuring an alcoholic (for his health!) robot, a one-eyed lead lady, a lobster scientist, and the rest of the company?!
