HTC Incredible Gingerbread update halted, being “enhanced”

UPDATE: New Gingerbread OTA update is available, isn’t easy to install.

Several weeks ago, Verizon began rolling out an OTA Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for the HTC Droid Incredible. While many received the update, I never did…and now I finally have some insight into what happened.

After calling Verizon and being told that I would get the update “when the system notifies you that it is available” (thanks!), I eventually contacted Verizon via Twitter (@VZWSupport), who provided the following information:

@ I've still NOT received the gingerbread update to my @ Droid Incredible. What gives? I called and got zero assistance. Help.

@ The update is being enhanced. We will advise our followers when we have more information. Thank you! ^AE

@ Thanks for the update. Will the "enhanced" version be pushed to folks who got the old version which seems to be causing issues?

@ The enhanced version will be be pushed to all users of the device. ^CM

After speaking with several people who received the initial update, it seems the software was really buggy and causing lots of issues. So while I appreciate that Verizon is seemingly fixing whatever issues the last update caused, their lack of communication and explanation remains incredibly frustrating. Hopefully the “enhanced” update will be pushed out much sooner than later. In the meantime, those of us who never received the last update might have actually dodged a bullet.
