Update: More bad news folks – Engadget Mobile got word that the pricing is incorrect, i.e. it will NOT come with the app, and no mention of iPod touch 🙁 .
The highly anticipated TomTom Car Kit made a brief appearance online in the Euro Apple Store earlier today. Although no longer up for pre-order, the posting brought along both good and bad news, however its credibility is suspect due to the up and down nature of the listing.
Starting with the good news: The Car Kit was list for €99.95 ($147.52 U.S.) for Europe and £99.95 ($162.20 U.S.) for the U.K and includes both the physical adapter AND the navigation app (which runs $99 by itself), making for a relatively reasonable purchase price for the whole kit and kaboodle.
Now for the potentially terrible news: The listing specifically stated, “Note: The Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, but the Car Kit app only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.” This is in sharp contrast to the previous information that strongly suggested compatibility with the iPod touch.
Hopefully this was just a misunderstanding and that posting was incorrect. While it would make some sense for the Car Kit to only work with the already GPS-equipped iPhone, it seems bizarre that TomTom would have made previous reference to iPod touch compatibility only to remove the feature and turn down an increasingly large segment of potential customers. Only time will tell.
