Having recently migrated from an old machine to a new desktop, I had almost everything setup just the way I like it. Only, I couldn’t figure out how to transfer all the (free, haven’t paid for a single one yet!) apps from my iPod touch (2G) to the new iTunes install.
The default syncing that happens when you first plug-in the iPod didn’t work. When I tried to sync just the applications, iTunes politely threatened to erase and replace all the apps on the iPod touch with the non-existent ones on my computer. A quick search of Apple’s support site turned up the answer: File > Transfer Purchases from iPod. Alternatively, you can right-click on iPod in the iTunes Device list and select “Transfer Purchases” to achieve the same result.
The “reverse” transfer works for apps and other files purchased from the iTunes Store to any computer (up to 5) that is authorized for your iTunes Store account. Oh, and all of this (obviously) applies to iPhones as well.

what if the other apps are purchased from a different account? how can i transfer those to my computer?? help please
It should prompt you to enter the AppleID(email) and password for that account. At least it did for me on a Mac with iTunes version 10.6.1.
But this method hasn’t worked for me yet, I’m trying again as I post this.
Many thanks for the article that helped me avoid manually downloading all of my apps. Excellents
Thank you for posting this! This saved me a great deal of time and money!
You just need to authorize your computer to whatever accounts are in the iPod and you’re golden!
thanks bro u rock

Just restored my iPhone and in the act of doing so, iTunes cleared everything. Good thing I had everything on an iPod Touch. Even though I couldn’t figure out how to get my apps onto my iTunes at first, this post helped a lot. Thanks man.

Dude you have no idea how many different searches i went through that all wanted me to buy stuff or change my settings. You are a life savor, rock on
Does anyone else think that this is absurd that apple asks to erase your idevice instead of asking if you’d like to transfer everything you’ve bought first?
