The real “skinny” on iPod touch 2

Like any (non-hating) gadgeteer, I was interested to see what Apple would pull out of its (white glossy) hat at yesterday’s event.  Among the many foreseeable announcements was the second generation of iPod touch devices.

Don’t get me wrong…as a first gen owner, I couldn’t help but get a little envious when Jobs announced the latest iTouch now has dedicated volume control buttons, a built-in speaker, and improved battery life (who cares about Nike+ support).

Jealously aside, I was a bit surprised to hear the J-man himself make false representations (see video above) about the new iTouch, specifically in regards to the thinness of the device.   Jobs’ made two misrepresentations: “but its even thinner” and “didn’t think the last one could get thinner…”.

Size and weight:

  • Width: 2.4 inches (61.8 mm)
  • Depth: 0.31 inch (8 mm)

iPod touch (2nd generation) – Technical Specifications

Size and weight:

  • Height:4.3 inches (110 mm)
  • Width: 2.4 inches (61.8 mm)
  • Depth: 0.33 inch (8.5 mm)
  • Weight: 4.05 ounces (115 grams)

It’s reasonable for Jobs to be excited about a new product, but it is entirely unreasonable for him to lie about the details.  Now if you will excuse me, I’ve got to go hawk my 1st gen on CL…
