(Get in my way and) There Will Be Blood

There Will Be BloodWith all due respect to No Country For Old Men, I think There Will Be Blood is more deserving of the title – Best Film of the Year. More on that later.

There Will Be Blood was inspired by a 1927 Upton Sinclair novel, Oil!. The film portrays the life of Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned self-proclaimed “oil man.” Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, along with his (adopted) son, H.W., are approached by a young man named Paul Sunday who claims that his family’s land (Little Boston, California) is full of liquid gold.

Not to be one to squander such an opportunity, Plainview (who is obsessively competitive) and H.W. set out to explore the potential oil in wild California…

Now back to my original claim. While NCFOM was an extremely well made movie, TWBB ups the ante. The incredible cinematography coupled with outstanding acting (Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, etc), a fantastic soundtrack, and a more believable/real-world story all make TWBB a better film. The character development, casting, costuming, and the all around attention to detail really drive the story home.
